I warn everyone at once - the car has already been sold and this review does not carry commercial interest.

Emotions have already subsided, but there are impressions both bad and good.

Before buying, there were the following requirements for the car:
- C - class
- Atmospheric engine with hydraulic compensators (for HBO)
- Large trunk
- Two-zone climate
- Cruise control with speed limiter

Therefore, a Peugeot 408 with an EC5 engine on mechanics in the Style configuration was chosen. Oddly enough, the Peugeot 408 is not only the cheapest car in this class, but also cheaper than budget cars like Kia Rio in similar trim levels. The search for suitable options did not take much time at all. I took the car with a mileage of 115,000 km and sold it at a mileage of 202,000 km. I drove 87,000 km during my ownership on it .

During this period, there were several breakdowns:
- 143,000 km hub hummed
- 150,000 km complete replacement of the front suspension (as of July 2021, a complete bulkhead cost 27,000 rubles)
- 170,000 km hub bearing hummed again
- 180,000 km the engine plug stopped spinning. A temporary solution is a plug from ZMZ – 406. In the future, an expensive replacement of the pallet.
- 190,000 flowed the valve cover gasket, which is considered a consumable on this motor, which serves 60,000 km.

Advantages of Peugeot 408

1. The price of the car on the secondary market. The cheapest in its class.
2. The space of the cabin. Almost comparable to a Toyota Camry.
3. High clearance of 178 mm.
4. Large trunk. 560 liters, which is 8 liters less than the queen of the Octavia A7 class. But at the same time, the opening is very narrow, even though the hinges are made according to the scissors system and do not hide the space. Thank you that the back sofa is folding.
5. The body is not subject to rust and the appearance of chips on the hood.
6. A huge windshield after which you feel uncomfortable in other cars.
7. The sound insulation is excellent - one of the best in the class.
8. Thick doors and a huge front panel inspire a sense of security.
9. Smooth running. The car is heavy, so it goes calmly, like an iron.
10. Suspension. She is omnivorous, you can fly through the pits, I think the resource is good enough. At the same time, the Peugeot 408 is controlled very cool – it's a pleasure to take turns.

Now the disadvantages of the Peugeot 408

1. The engine. If you look at the Internet superficially, you can find information that the EC5 engine differs from the reliable TU5JP4 only by the phase shifter. In fact, this is not the case. First of all, the new engine has a lightweight piston with weakened oil removal rings. The rings of every second car after 100,000 km usually lie down, especially if there was cheap oil or bad gasoline. The second point is the catalyst on this motor. He lives about 100,000 km, and then begins to annoy with an engine malfunction alarm. The ideal option is to install a decoy. But some remove the catalyst and get an oil burner of 1 liter per 1000 km. No one has found a clear explanation for this problem, but judging by the messages of chats and forums on these motors, the connection "removed the catalyst – got the oil burner" works 100%.
In the vastness of our homeland, craftsmen have found two recipes for solving this problem: overhaul using TU5 pistons and drilling out caps similar to EC5 pistons and threading the EC5 piston under the TU5 piston ring. Both options work and provide a long life to the motor.

2. Fuel consumption. The car weighs a lot, so in the city 9-11 liters is the norm for it.

3. Transmission. Very short transmissions. In 5th gear, 110 km/h is 3000 rpm. The noise from the engine is incredible. The solution is to replace the gear 5 gear. The clutch serves from 60 to 80 thousand km. This is extremely small, considering that when replacing, you need to change not only the standard kit – disc, basket, squeeze, but also the plug along with the oil seals. In a word, an expensive pleasure.

4. Despite the galvanizing, the paint from the thresholds and rear arches peels off quickly.

5. Some consumables may surprise with their cost. For example: the rear brake discs are assembled with a bearing and an abs sensor. Their cost starts from 8000 rubles per disk (a good analog). Front wheels are much cheaper.

6. The front headlight mounts are constantly breaking. Thank you that the manufacturer has provided repair kits.

7. In case of an accident, body parts cost very expensive money. Insurance on this car will not hurt very much.

8. In general, it is better to carry out maintenance in specialized services with the purchase of spare parts in the same place.

9. It is difficult to find spare parts in the catalog. But there are profile forums with articles of parts and good analogues that are not always selected by VIN.

10. The standard tire size 215/55/16 is the only tire option that the manufacturer himself allows for installation on this car. But the twin brother Citroen C4, according to factory recommendations, allows for the installation of 8 wheel dimensions.
Personally, I had wheels 195/65/R15 just for regional roads. The clearance on these wheels is lower by 4 mm, unlike the regular ones.

11. For those who are going to install HBO: when installing, you will have to make a decoy of the fuel level sensor. Otherwise, the low fuel level indicator in the tank will beep constantly.
