Canon EOS 6D Mark II Body SLR Camera - reviews

During this year, huge changes have come and gone for me as a photographer.

I grew up in terms of photography and radically decided to change the optics and the device to a fairly professional level.

I previously broadcast to you and showed you photo reports from my former Canon 600D camera. But, as they say, requests have increased.

I worked with the old man all summer and still saved up for a new device, now I'm a million times happier, and clients get unrealistically beautiful pictures.

In addition, bookings for photography have tripled, and this is good news.

So, now my new assistant in creating beautiful photos is a Canon 6D Mark II. My strength and hope for a better future. The lens was not provided in the kit. Only the "carcass" of the camera and various accessories inside the box were sold.

The device fits completely in my hand, but it is quite heavy for me. After each photo shoot, my fingers ache. But what to do, for the sake of creating beautiful pictures. And now the most important thing in this photo report is the photos taken with a Canon 6D Mark II camera.

***

I am often asked what kind of equipment I shoot, including for irecommend, and finally the hour has come when it's time to show my cards. My camera is called Canon 6D MarkII, and I bought it 3 years ago for 125,000 money. I shoot them with a tamron 24-70 lens and a few more TV sets, with a fish eye. Photography for me is an outlet that was previously my job. You know, when people ask you what you would do if you didn't get paid for it, and you could do it all the time. I would say without hesitation - a photograph. It is noteworthy that when I was under 15 years old, I hated being photographed and the faces on all the frames are, to put it mildly, dissatisfied. Years passed, I bought my first Canon, as I remember now, 450 D, and with it my long journey into big photography began. Since then, 4 cameras have changed in my life, according to the increasing degree of coolness and high cost. I think it is frankly stupid to buy such equipment if you are just an amateur or a beginner, this technique is closer to the pros and for commercial shooting. This was justified because I had graduated from the profession of "Photographer/photojournalist" and decided to make shooting my profession. Therefore, the purchase of good equipment was very justified. I think you don't need photos of my carcass's boxes, there's nothing interesting on them, what's more important is how he takes photos, and even videos.

So, in front of us is a full-frame, heavy carcass that weighs (I haven't checked, but the manufacturer writes.

and it would be possible to wear it on a belt so that the neck falls off, but I can't stand straps on cameras, even during commercial shooting.

The heaviness of the case is explained by its powerful design. Aluminum alloy body, polycarbonate. Unfortunately, the camera itself had to be shot on the phone, so these frames will be very different in quality. The case is non-slip, a special rubberized perforation is made in the places of the arm girth, similar to the skin, which ensures that in the presence of straight hands, the camera will hold well in them and will not slip out. And you can pump up your hands with such weight if you work with this carcass regularly, and even with a flash.

Let's go through the main characteristics, from which it will become clear Why I needed him so much!

Canon EOS 6D Mark II has a matrix with 26.2 million pixels.

It was the first time I had a camera with a rotary screen in my hands, so not only is it also touch-sensitive, and what a thrill I feel when I can just zoom in on the frame without dropping it on the computer, but immediately assess the quality of the details on the display.

The touch screen is very bright, quite thick, rotates around its axis 180 degrees in each direction. Yes, he is fat, and tight in his agility, but he conveys the picture made very well. And in the case when it is necessary to take a video of myself, I turn it in the opposite direction so that you can see how I look in the frame, it's super convenient, you don't need to pile up any mirrors and other inconveniences.

In addition, the display rotates and the reverse side, closing in the recess of the carcass itself. I keep the camera in this condition so as not to damage the display accidentally.

Any professional camera implies several shooting styles, which are located around the bullet on the top of the carcass + a preset display on the top right side, where you can see the aperture, iso, the number of frames taken, the charge level and much more.

I usually shoot in creative mode, which in the Canon 5D mark II series was also called "P". CA stands for "Creative Automatic". In fact, this is the same "green" mode, in which you can additionally control the depth of field and something else - indirectly, through the sliders on the LCD.

The operation of the shutter click is quite quiet, and over time it began to slow down a little, I think to check it at the service center. The shutter button is tight, as usual, located under the fingers of the right hand.

Bashmag is native to the flash, it was included in the package, it has been gathering dust lately without doing anything, I don't use the flash temporarily now, and sometimes, by the way, I shoot in the studio, of course there are additional light sources there, but you can also set up the flash for this.

I use auto focus quite often, it's convenient here. Although there are plenty of point options here, there is an opportunity to focus on the smallest details, closing the rest of the background with a beautiful bokeh.

From the presets there are options to choose from:

you can choose the priority of light shades, which is perfect for shooting delicate girlish portraits.;
auto brightness
correction noise reduction at long exposure works well, especially if the shooting is at night, noise reduction at high ISO also applies to this possibility),
You can choose automatic correction of peripheral illumination
or an extended HDR range.
In general, as you can see, there are a lot of presets here, and they make life very easy if you know how to use them.

The battery is native, I always prefer native batteries, they last longer and I haven't changed this one in 3 years yet. It should be enough for 1200 frames, but I honestly did not count in the frames, I have enough for 7 hours of continuous work, approximately, then I need to take a spare battery.

The charging socket is standard, snaps on the button, firmly, does not fall out. By the way, the battery itself is very heavy, large, and it seems to me that with each version of Canon, it gets bigger. If the phones are thinner, then everything is the opposite. But the battery capacity, by the way, increases from version to version.

The only problem with the Canon 6 d mark II carcass is the fact that contacts are periodically buggy, and then batteries, then flash drives. With a flash drive in general, an ambush, regularly refuses to work. I have already cleaned the contacts, and formatted the flash drive, and bought a new one, one fig, with an enviable frequency my lyalka writes to me saying throw the flash drive away! On the left side of the carcass body there are connectors for connecting external devices. The plug is rubber, easily opens and closes, reliably protecting the connectors from dust and moisture. If I had an infinite amount of time, then I would be engaged in my favorite type of shooting - macro or portrait photography. And subject shooting of course. I even take photos for the irecommend website with this device, and it turns out very glossy, especially if I have time and mood. All these panties are beads, flowers, details..everything is very lively, juicy, real, and uplifting.

I am very sorry that I cannot show you the most beautiful pictures of wedding photos together with faces, because irek does not approve of this, and people between have given their consent to their commercial use. Therefore, you will have to close the faces and show the picture quality without them. It turned out a little creepy, but maybe you can finish drawing these happy eyes in your imagination.

One of my favorite types of shooting is black and white shots. The camera can be set up to take black and white frames at once, but they turn out to be more gray than b/w, without proper contrast, so I always shoot:
in RAW mode, that is, a raw frame from which almost any quality can be extracted, by shamanic tambourines and photoshop, and even a very dead light can be made very watchable here.
always in color. Black-and-white frames are made quite easily in the same Photoshop. When do I resort to using a black and white image? When there are too many details and everything is too colorful, or when shooting architecture and geometric objects, such as in the embankment of Tomsk or its icy streets with pigeons. Thanks to the ability to set the priority of external illumination, I manage to make bright landscapes, air waves, adjust the shooting process under artificial lighting and with a flash. What I love about the quality of Canon pictures is that they are juicy initially, sometimes you can take them in the rav and you can not adjust if it is a bright macro of colors, for example. And look at the bokeh, how much light! In the photo with chicory - the maximum quality of approximation on my tamron, central or point focus. Of course, I also shoot my jewelry and myself on a Canon 6D Mark II, and the only thing he doesn't do is not slim. For example, pictures of my jewelry in artificial light, some even taken in one click, without post-processing, pay attention to this.

You can write about photography almost endlessly, but I will say only one thing - it's worth picking up Canon once and you won't be able to tear yourself away from it. Excellent quality pictures, clear picture, full frame, all possible and impossible presets, the ability to enlarge photos directly on the LCD display, shoot yourself on video and watch the process! This is a very exciting process, which ideally, of course, for such money should make a profit. I recommend the technique.

I've been filming for a long time! Since childhood, it was a film camera, which was not used as often as I wanted, then there was a digital camera, which led to wild delight and admiration. Hooray, you could take pictures to your heart's content. When I was a student, I earned my first DSLR, and it became the Canon EOS 500D. I am very grateful to a friend who helped with the choice at that moment! I have never regretted it! I shot it for a long time from 2011 and actually until the end of 2017. Now I'm not working, I'm raising my son. But after my son goes to kindergarten, I don't want to work in my specialty, but I want to do what I love - photography! I often hear that it was high time for me to start conducting paid photo shoots, but it so happened that I did not dare to do it. Many people buy a DSLR and, being called a photographer, go and shoot for money. The result, of course, is not very good, but people are satisfied, they still won't take it off themselves. I envy such brave photographers. What was stopping me? Well, except for other work and the upcoming maternity leave.. I was also stopped by the fact that I am not 100% sure that I can give a guaranteed high-quality result. And one of the reasons for this was the insufficient level of my past camera. I know that a lot of photographers start with Canon EOS 500D level DSLRs. Yes, it gives an excellent result, for example, if you shoot in a studio with flashes, or in good lighting conditions. But, if you find yourself shooting with insufficient light, there will be terrible noises and the overall result will not be very good: a lot of smudges, lack of focus, dim colors, etc. I had such a situation and, frankly, it's a failure. It's good that I didn't take money for it. I photograph a lot, so I know the abilities of the Canon EOS 500D well.

Why the 6D Mark II? The prospect of working as a photographer made me think about changing photographic equipment. Still, I want to be a professional and be proud to give away photos! It is clear that I want the best camera, but so far for me the 6D Mark II is an ideal option, although everyone positions it as a good backup camera for a professional wedding photographer. Or the camera is more for enthusiastic amateurs than for professionals who earn money from photography.

Canon EOS 6D Mark II is the second generation of Canon 6D digital SLR cameras of the EOS family. Introduced on June 29, 2017, it replaced the EOS 6D model.

The camera has a full-frame matrix corresponding to the 135 film format and a mount for Canon EF lenses. The EOS 6D Mark II was the first full-frame camera in the EOS family to receive a rotary screen. Among the key features of the model are a 26—megapixel matrix with sensitivity up to 102.400 ISO, providing autofocus by phase difference method, 45 cross-type focus points, built-in GPS receiver, support for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC wireless networks, burst shooting speed up to 6.5 frames per second.

This camera is the cheapest among full-frame cameras ("full frame" cameras).

About the advantages of full-frame cameras:

The quality of the viewfinder is much higher than that of cameras with a crop factor.
Gives a broader perspective. But here anyone likes it, of course.
Full-frame cameras will delight you with high ISO values due to the larger sensor size.
Having many serious advantages, it can help to get better results when shooting in low light conditions.

We bought a camera with a Contact at the end of November 2017. The price was 124,999 money. At that time, and it seems that there is still an action on the Canon website. After registering the purchase, we were refunded 12 thousand. There was also a cashback from LetyShops in the amount of about 3,700 money to come. But for some reason it doesn't come. Lettishops themselves do not know why the Messenger does not send it. But they promise to figure it out and have already credited us 2000 money themselves to make it easier to wait.

We also bought a Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM lens. Since 85 mm is the most standard option for shooting portraits.

With the 500D I used lenses:

Canon EF 50 mm F1.4 usm

Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM

10-18 mm is not suitable for full-frame cameras, and I have already sold it.

But I also sell 50 mm, but they don't take it yet, and I myself actively use it. The 85 mm has a very strong approximation, so even taking a picture of some things for reviews on it is already problematic. And you can't take a picture of yourself without turning on the remote control. The length of the arms is not enough.

Yes, photohobby is an expensive pleasure! One day you buy a DSLR, and then you realize that you need this, and this, and a bunch of other things.

The level of this technique implies that you are no longer a beginner, so no one will chew everything here anymore. The manual is really very brief, read at a time. This is not a manual book from Canon EOS 500D, where everything is written in detail. And then I couldn't figure it out without preliminary preparation. I read articles on the Internet first. I cannot perceive many new words and concepts without a more detailed explanation. But now the acquaintance with the new camera went much faster - in a day. And in the settings of the Canon EOS 500D, I fully figured out about a year after the purchase. Well, because at first I was satisfied with the Auto mode.

Screen. What immediately catches the eye in the 6D is the rotary touch screen! This is a very cool solution! The rotary screen allows you to shoot in Live View mode from uncomfortable positions. And the fact that the touch screen is generally unexpected and very convenient! You can set the focus directly on the screen if you are shooting in Live View or shooting a video. The display also allows you to release the shutter, zoom in on the captured photo with gestures. There is a quick on-screen menu that is perfect for touch control. I will also say about a very nice bonus of such a screen - you can take selfies on the 6D. At 85 mm I really do not have enough arm length, but at 50 mm it is very convenient. I tortured my husband to photograph makeup for reviews. I was very uncomfortable on the 500D myself, there were a lot of misses. And now everything is easy and convenient. Of course, that's not why we bought the 6D, but it's convenient!

Sound. At first I couldn't get used to the new sound when the shutter was released)) It seemed that something was wrong with him. It's just very different from the sound on the 500D.

Buttons. Here everything is completely different from what it was on the 500D. But you get used to it quickly. Now there is an additional display on top and there are buttons for setting some shooting parameters.

Photosensitivity - ISO.

The ISO range here reaches the value of 40,000 units! And this is without programmatically increasing the range of photosensitivity! In simple words, it allows you to shoot in low-light conditions. For example, you can take a night view from the window, where only the lights of the lanterns are visible in the pitch darkness, and as a result you will get full visibility in the photo!

Autofocus points. There are 45 of them here! But they were concentrated in the middle part of the frame. Out of habit, I shoot with the center point and, holding the shutter button halfway down, change the frame layout.

Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth and NFC.

Yes, there is such a thing here!

I tried to send photos from the camera to the phone via Wi-Fi. The book has instructions on how to do this. To do this, you need to download a special application from Canon to your phone. Everything worked out! This is convenient, you can throw off photos immediately during or after a photo shoot - for filling in Instagram. Wi-Fi is also needed for remote control of the camera. That is, the phone becomes a remote control!

Bluetooth enabled does not drain the battery.

Bluetooth can initiate Wi-Fi communication (if the devices were previously paired).

There is no NFC on my Huawei Honor 5A Mobile phone.

And if your smartphone supports NFC, to establish a connection, it's enough just to bring two devices together — a camera and a smartphone.

I don't turn on GPS, but it's so cool to see the shooting points later.

With an update period of several minutes, GPS operation has almost no effect on battery power.

The speed of work. Speed is important when shooting a reportage. For shooting portraits or just home photos, the speed of work suits me quite well. But I noticed that the 6D, unlike the 500D, allows you to shoot the series much longer, and after shooting it happens that she "thinks".

The declared length of a continuous series in RAW is 21 shots. Not so much by the standards of professional equipment, but quite decent for a class of semi-professionals.

The actual buffer volume when using a fast memory card was 25 images, after which the serial shooting began to falter and lose its rhythm.

The serial shooting speed of the Canon EOS 6D Mark II is 6.5 frames/s. A relatively large camera buffer is "clogged" in a little less than 4 seconds.

Video. Here, the video recording is turned on by the lever on the button to turn on the Live View mode. Easy and fast.

The maximum duration of the video is 29 minutes 59 seconds, the file size is 4 GB.

Recording is possible in resolutions up to 1920×1080 at 50/60 fps. The file formats are MPEG4 AVC / H.264.

It is possible to use an external microphone. However, there is no headphone output. This somewhat limits the use of the camera in reportage videography.

***

There was no autofocus on the Canon 500D when shooting video. Manually focusing was very difficult, normal videos were obtained only with a stationary subject. And here the tracking autofocus works on the 6D! You can also set the focus point on the touch screen by clicking on the desired object. The only sound on the video is audible when focusing, but this is noticeable mainly when the video is shot in silence. It is also possible to set the smooth focus function in the Menu. This is when the focus slowly shifts from object to object, suitable for certain creative ideas.

Technical features:

Full HD (1920×1080) with a frequency of up to 60 fps; HD (1280×720) up to 60 fps
High-speed shooting 6.5 fps with autofocus support; 4.5 fps in live view mode with Dual Pixel CMOS AF autofocus support
Autofocus at all points for lenses with f/8 aperture; 45 AF II system focus points, all of them cross-type, center point with sensitivity up to EV - 3 at f2.8 aperture; increased vertical and horizontal area occupied by the autofocus area compared to Canon EOS 6D
Red illumination of focus points in the viewfinder
Viewfinder Intelligent Viewfinder II
AI Servo AF III focus mode with EOS iTR AF technology support
Built-in GPS support with a magnetic compass used for geotagging: GLONASS, GPS, QZSS systems are supported
ISO sensitivity increased from 100-25600 in Mark III to 100-40000.
The flicker suppression system introduced in the EOS 7D Mark II and EOS-1D X Mark II — the camera takes pictures at the moment of the greatest brightness of the scene. Activating this function may reduce the burst rate
A rotary touch screen that allows you to select the focus point with your finger during photography and video recording, as well as to conveniently take selfies
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC for wireless file transfer and remote camera control
New Image Style Fine Detail
The ability to shoot timelaps in 4K

My impression of the shooting. There will be a lot of emotions now.
The difference with the 500D is just huge! It's noticeable right away! I was shocked from the first frames that this happens. Previously, looking at some beautiful photos, I began to think what was so special here that was added in Photoshop. And now it's clear that it's all about expensive high-quality equipment! Initially, a high-quality shot frame is faster, easier and more pleasant to process. 6D allows you to get photos of very decent quality even without processing. It is clear that processing will improve the quality even more, and it is necessary for work! But in principle, if it's just about photos for yourself, then you can leave it like that! Photos look much more alive, they are brighter, richer, clearer! At first it is very surprising! Where previously the lighting conditions gave gray frames, now they are saturated! Where there were no noises before, now there are none!

Here, for example, is a photo taken at ISO 4000, when it was already quite dark outside. On a 500D, I would shoot at the highest ISO value - 3200, and there would be terrible noises. You can hardly see them here!

And here's another experiment to test the difference between the two cameras.

Shot on the 500D and on the 6D mark II in a coupe with a Canon EF 50 mm F1.4 usm lens. The shooting conditions are exactly the same. I took pictures in the evening under artificial lighting: yellow light from above, white light from the side of the lamp. So the light is very unfortunate and looks different at different angles. All frames are made in Av mode.

Here are the frames from the 500D. Here the white balance (hereinafter BB) is in Auto mode. ISO 800, f/2.2, 1/60.

Conclusion.

Canon EOS 6D Mark II, in my opinion, is clearly suitable not only for amateurs, but also for professionals. Yes, the camera is the cheapest among full-frame, but its capabilities are huge! Excellent frame quality under a variety of shooting conditions! The ability to shoot in low light!

The rotary touch screen is a convenient modern addition!

There are various wireless capabilities using Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth and NFC.

For me, of course, this camera has no disadvantages)

If you like to take pictures, quality is important to you, and financial opportunities allow, then, in my personal opinion, why not buy a 6D! That is, I mean people for whom photography is at least a hobby, people who are interested in learning about the camera's capabilities, and who do not let the camera out of their hands! Now almost every second iPhone, and the price for them is 50-70 thousand, which is also not enough. So for a person who is fond of photography, this is a great camera! But keep in mind that you need to add the purchase of a lens (lenses) to the cost of the camera, that the camera is not light in weight, and that you also need to purchase a special bag or backpack to make it convenient for you and safe for the camera.

Although, of course, purely for home purposes, people are usually satisfied with a Canon 1200D level camera. Together with the whale lens, it will reach 25 thousand. This is exactly the option when you want good quality, an inexpensive price and, in principle, there is no desire to deal with the subtleties of settings. That is, only important events are filmed, and basically the camera is on the shelf.

Of course, the choice of camera is subjective, but I want to say that high-quality expensive equipment will definitely delight and surprise with its quality! Of course, the ability to see the frame, knowledge of the basics of composition, etc., is important, but it also comes with experience. And to make the desire to learn and create stronger, good quality photos and great camera capabilities will only benefit!

Rich functionality, many wireless communication options, including using a smartphone instead of a remote control, importing photos to your phone in seconds. In addition to manual and semi-automatic modes, there are two additional manual modes with presets.(when shooting color and black-and-white reportage in jpg, this is a big advantage. Full frame, rotary screen, additional screen with all settings. Almost any mode/ settings can be switched without going to the menu, and this saves time and battery. I.e., literally, the entire interface is at hand. Before that, I used a Canon 550D, this is of course heaven and earth. I have been using it for the third year, maybe someday in the future I will switch to mirrorless models, but today I am completely satisfied with this device.
