Sony Alpha SLT-A77 - review

Sony Alpha SLT-A77 is a great device. And even for their own money. I took it for a video to my Sony NEX-VG20. They said that the picture is similar. Well, I decided to take it.

I immediately chose from second-hand ones. They bought the 57th model right in front of me, so I had to buy this one. I still haven't regretted it. Yes, after other cameras, it is unusual that it constantly changes the brightness-exposure. Well, I immediately turned off the constant autofocus, so there were no problems here.

Advantages of Sony Alpha SLT-A77:

- a good picture (in photos and videos)
- a lot of white balance settings; 3 presets, which is convenient "in the field"
- convenient in the hand
- all navigation and management are thought out

Cons of Sony Alpha SLT-A77:

- manual operation mode
- when turned off/on, switches to autofocus, and to shoot video in M mode
- you need a manual focus, you need to switch, and it's quite disturbing

Well, in general, a great camera. A good camera. GPS is very pleasant when traveling. The picture is very similar to my video camera, so I'm happy with the purchase.

Sony Alpha SLT-A77 is a decent camera. I have been familiar with Sony technology for a long time, I have always been pleased with the quality, this camera is no exception. I took a Sony a77 to replace my old Sony a230. Not once during the entire time of use there were no complaints, compliance - price - quality. Suitable for both beginners and more experienced amateur photographers.

I will highlight the advantages:

- Electronic viewfinder (EVI): this is just a godsend for those who shoot with manual lenses manufactured in the USSR (such as Helios, Jupiter), accurate focus guidance is almost always provided, while there were frequent misses with OVI, as well as the fact that the picture in the viewfinder corresponds to the finished image. Also the field of view of the viewfinder is 100%
- Video shooting: 50 frames per second, HD video, excellent sound quality.
- Burst shooting speed of 12 frames per second
- Design, rotary screen
- Not very large size, comfortable grip of the camera
- The body material is not plastic + waterproof (can be removed almost under a downpour)

I will highlight the disadvantages:

-Very strong digital noise in low light
-Shooting RAW only 24MP

Attached photos: with lenses: 50mm 1.8 (landscape and snail), Helios 44-2 (girl)

Briefly. Why Sony Alpha SLT-A77 is better than Sony a65 and it's worth paying extra for.

The opinion of the camera owner:

- the camera is great, really heavy

- but the grip is sooo comfortable, both for my hand and for my husband

- recess under the fingers, the place of grip is not plastic

Unlike Sony Alpha SLT-a65

- there is an adjustment of the camera for lenses, i.e. if the lens is defective (it happens), then you can adjust the camera, and not take the lens for repair or somewhere there

- there is also a limitation of auto-ISO convenient, shooting at ISO 50, very short exposures - i.e., technical advantages)

- the screen rotates better in 3 degrees of freedom instead of 2

- focusing is better - there are 15 cross points instead of 3

- two wheels, which are very convenient both when viewing and when setting parameters

- upper window with parameters- when shooting with an electronic viewfinder, it is convenient

- 4 customizable buttons instead of 2, they are not superfluous

- there is dust and moisture protection at the camera, it is also useful

- instead of buttons, a joystick is convenient, but also with buttons it is normal

- serial shooting at 12 frames per second versus 10 is a nonsense difference, but there is

- the camera can connect both contrast and phase focus, Sony A 65 only phase

- bracketing up to 2 stops for manual HDR

- it is possible to connect a battery handle -for vertical convenient shooting and an additional battery

- there is a super JPEG mode, great when you don't want to shoot in RAW

Sony Alpha SLT-A77 is a good camera. Usage experience:a year or more. Sony is a workhorse for me, it copes with complex shooting in the theater, where, as you know, there is always semi-darkness and complex multicolored lighting, gives good quality pictures, by the way, I would not say that it makes a lot of noise with a lack of light, it is quite working iso 600. An electronic viewfinder is something that I use only when shooting, while a rotary screen is indispensable when creating complex frames. A lot of "stuffing" for beginners - dozens of shooting modes, effects, settings, I always shoot in a simple manual mode. Regarding moisture protection, there was a dive into the sea with a camera, the time under water is one second. As a result, the camera did not turn on, a week later a new battery was bought - voila, everything worked. The second time there was a dive into the lake from a boat - the time in the water was 3 seconds, the battery was instantly pulled out, the lens was disconnected. After three days, the camera is as new, everything works. About the carcass itself and the body. The camera is heavy, weighty, easy to grip, I can shoot manually with one hand, does not slip, does not get dirty, but the paint has peeled off the metal for the second year. Around the shutter release button is especially strong. The battery in the cold will die very quickly, even in autumn, when you can still walk in sneakers / sweatshirts, it already sits down noticeably quickly, or even completely buggy, showing that the battery is dead, although 2 minutes ago it was 100% charged, so sometimes you have to carry the battery to the shooting location, sorry, in a bra, and then during the shooting repeatedly warm the armpit. Powerful built-in flash.

Sony Alpha SLT-A77 is my favorite camera. This is really my favorite camera! The first was the 35th, eventually moved to the 77th, and I'm not happy! There are no complaints. Very comfortable, ergonomically - just fine! I am pleased with the convenient rotary screen, which is relevant when shooting macro or something that requires a special approach, so to speak. That is, there is no need to bend over backwards when there is such a miracle. The viewfinder is also convenient, in general, all camera navigation is simple and easy to understand. In the 35th there was also a hint menu, for beginners - the very thing. I like the color rendering, although I work not with my native Sony lens, but with Sigma. The camera and lens have worked hard and now we do not get tired of pleasing each other with beautiful pictures. What I wish to everyone!
