Samsung NX mini system camera review and manual

The Samsung NX mini kit 9-27mm compact camera is characterized by simple operation, ease of use and traditional design with a white plastic body. With dimensions of 100 x 62 x 23mm and a weight of just 196g, the camera is always handy and accessible at any time.

I'm the kind of user who wants to shoot masterpieces at the touch of a button, but doesn't want to carry around heavy bags of equipment. This camera lives up to my expectations: it's small, it has a lot of different modes for beginners and lazy people, and it has a function to share photos to social networks via Wi-Fi (except Instagram). If the photo is not good enough, the Face Retouch function, which is available in shooting or post-processing mode, can help. Please note that the device may not always successfully detect your face, and in such cases, the device may display the message “Face not detected” (for example, those who take selfies from the top and sides may encounter this problem). In order for the device to correctly detect your face and perform retouching, you must choose the correct angle both when you take the photo and when you post-process it on the camera. The 90-degree swivel screen will also be appreciated by video bloggers (by the way, you can upload videos directly from the camera to YouTube). The camera is also lightweight and compact, so aluminum monopods easily hold it. Video is recorded in Full HD 1080, duration - 30 minutes, the quality is excellent, but the sound is average, the microphone is not connected, and what is most annoying - the sound of focusing the lens is recorded. Interesting function of accelerated shooting - for 30 minutes you get about one and a half minutes of accelerated video, you get good timelapses.

The quality of photos is good, and if we take into account that the same pictures are obtained with soapboxes of the same size, then it is excellent. The camera was provided in a standard package with a 9 mm lens. Zoom is completely absent, both digital and physical. This is a disadvantage. Macro shooting is given to the device with difficulty, sometimes it refuses to shoot at all (my close-up photos of flowers are spoiled).Another disadvantage - uncomfortable body, the camera is easy to drop. The flash is so bad, like a cheap soapbox (but still there).I think these are the main disadvantages. I switched to it from a camera with a large zoom, so I am now adapting, but the main advantage - compactness and good quality photos. The cost is 13 000 rubles. The kit comes with a licensed Photoshop Lightroom, which costs about 5 thousand, so the real cost of the camera remains only to assume.

The perfect solution for selfies lovers. Everything you need in one device. Is it really a replacement for a DSLR camera? We'll look at the standard 9-27mm lens from the kit. You can find the specifications of this device on the Internet, and I will talk about how this camera works in practice, its advantages and disadvantages based on the camera data, and show some photos taken by the camera. We bought this unit to replace our heavy DSLR, hoping that the image quality would be as close to DSLR quality as possible. We bought it at MediaMarkt for about 13,000 rubles (memory card not included). The equipment is modest, but this is compensated by the presence of a Wi-Fi transmitter in the camera and a universal lens. This is quite enough for a beginning photographer!

Let me start with the disadvantages, of which there are very few:

Weak optical zoom - only 3x magnification. A bird on the wires or the eye of a seagull in the sky will not be captured.
Limited choice of optics - but for a beginning photographer, this lens can replace both portrait and wide-angle lenses.
The camera is too small, and when you hold it in your hand (it's awkward to hold), the lens overweighs.
Weak sound when recording video.
Very uncomfortable strap, and there is a risk of accidentally dropping the camera if you use such a loop for attachment. It would be better if the manufacturer made a strap attachment on both sides, so that you can put the camera around your neck, not just on your arm.
The magnesium alloy body looks fragile.
The covers (for the memory card slot and charging slot) are not secure. It's scary to open them unnecessarily because they are made of thin rubber pads.
The lens cap can easily get lost.
The lens mount ring sticks.
Some may find the unit noisy. I'm not paranoid, but this camera is definitely not silent.

Advantages:

High quality photos: the camera has a resolution of 20.9 million pixels for juicy and vivid pictures.
Touchscreen: fast and accurate response and finger focus.
Wi-Fi: instantly transfer photos and videos to your laptop or social networks, perfect for social networking enthusiasts.
Smart mode: includes face retouch, child mode, macro mode and more.
Long-lasting battery.
Lightweight and compact design: comparable to the lightness of DSLR cameras.
Wide range of focal lengths: captures both wide-angle and small objects, including bokeh, which is appreciated by many users.
Stable stabilizer: allows you to get sharp photos even when your hands are shaking.
Cute design: the body is made in the form of leather, available in different colors (brown, pink, white, yellow).
High speed: instant response and fast operation.
A lot of interesting features: the presence of both fully manual mode and automatic mode with the ability to edit photos in Photoshop.
Ability to shoot video in HD quality.
Flip-up screen.

To summarize, I would like to say that, of course, it is impossible to fully replace a DSLR with this camera, but Samsung offers a lot of features for a relatively small price. In addition, you can buy interchangeable lenses (17 variants in total), which will allow you to experiment with different types of shooting. Initially I was planning to buy a mirrorless camera Nikon S1 (costing about 19 000 rubles), but after comparing the features, weight and capabilities (I have a lot of respect for Nikon and use a DSLR of this brand), I opted for Samsung NX mini.Yes, I realize that the quality of Samsung's optics is somewhat lower than Nikon's, but if you need a simple and convenient camera for everyday shooting, then NX mini will be a great option!

Should you buy a DSLR if you are not a professional? My experience with Nikon D5100 and six months with Samsung NX Mini.I am not an expert in photography, but I love to shoot. So buying a quality camera was an important step for me, considering that I've been writing reviews on our site for a long time.I used to use a friend's Nikon D5100 DSLR, but decided to change my camera because of the inconvenience of carrying a large bag outside and on vacation. Then I started looking for compact cameras with high quality and chose Samsung NX Mini. Now I am a happy owner of this camera for 5 months and I am very satisfied. The camera is small, fits in your hand, with a large touch screen and a rising screen, so it is called a “selfie camera”.

For those who are just starting to learn manual mode, there is a great advantage - a lot of ready-made settings, you just need to press a button. The kit comes with two flashes: a built-in flash and an additional flash that needs to be mounted separately. This is inconvenient. I used the additional flash a few times and the photos turned out better, but it is inconvenient to carry it around, especially if you use the camera often. The built-in flash, I must say, is not bad either. Under good conditions, the photos are high quality and sharp. My friend and I compared photos taken with Samsung NX mini and Nikon D5100 and were surprised that the difference is almost imperceptible (keep in mind that the first one is a mirrorless camera and the second one is a DSLR), only in some photos you can notice that Nikon has slightly better light transmission and more blur. I tried shooting video. It turns out crisp. The camera automatically focuses and does it perfectly, again, compared to Nikon - the video is much better. The voice on the Samsung video is louder and more realistic. Focus is not lost, even when shooting animals. In five months I have never charged the camera. When I upload photos to my computer, it has time to charge itself and does it very quickly.

Analyzing the reviews, I can say that this camera is more than sufficient. The quality is excellent, the color rendition is good, and since it is handy for selfies, the task is made much easier. It's so easy to take photos for reviews of my body parts like never before. In all the time I've been using it, I have found one drawback. Sometimes when you take a lot of photos in a row and later start looking at the results, some photos won't open. They get corrupted and if you don't notice in time, you can take a lot of bad shots. In the end, if you take away from all the technical characteristics, in which, frankly speaking, I do not understand anything, and look at everything through the eyes of an amateur, I am very satisfied with my choice! All that I wanted from the camera, I got and, perhaps, even more than I expected. After all, buying a non-SLR camera, I, like many people, thought that if you don't spend about 20-25 thousand on a good DSLR, you won't see good photos. But I am glad that my assumptions turned out to be wrong. I have absolutely no regrets and I am convinced again and again that a camera is a thing that you want to carry with you often, and it is better to have it small and handy, always at hand, than expensive and excellent, which is “too lazy to take with you” and leave lying on the table at home.

Samsung believes that it should take the leading position in the camera market. However, it failed to achieve success in this direction. The company continued to follow the same strategy as in other segments of the market, gradually improving the functionality of cameras and offering lenses with NX mount at a reasonable price, which are considered the best value for money. However, Samsung underestimated the impact of the brand on consumers' perception of photographic equipment. Convincing Canon or Nikon fans to try something else proved to be an extremely difficult task. When users have been using a particular brand for years and have many lenses, switching to other models of photo equipment becomes almost impossible, such a decision must be an emotional one. Given that Samsung has not been able to surpass the quality of images provided by the grandees of the photo industry, the active development of this direction within the company has slowed down. Perhaps another issue is the high cost of devices from Samsung compared to its competitors. Although the company is not a newcomer in the segment of semi-professional equipment, it apparently believed that the fame of its other products speaks for itself. And that's where it was wrong. Overall, cameras like the NX30 or last year's NX300 are not bad choices for amateur and professional photographers. However, their high starting cost may put off potential buyers.
