Samsung Galaxy Camera EK-GC100 Instruction Manual and review

Excellent optical zoom 21x without loss of quality. Stabilizer is tolerable, not bad, comfortable in the hand, although not light. The display is very beautiful, everything is visible even in the sun. A lot of settings.

Disadvantages: In general, the photos turn out like on a great smartphone, but not at the level of a professional camera would like a little better quality.

For good lighting this camera is great, but it doesn't compare to a DSLR. Overall as a gadget it is excellent. Very convenient that the flash can be turned on and off with the touch of a finger. Quickly reset photos via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or email. Android can be installed, for example, on the TV or play games. All in all, this gadget is awesome! In the photo with maximum magnification, I took a picture from a distance of 120 meters.

Samsung Galaxy Camera EK-GC100 is a great option for everyday use. This device is easy to use (in my opinion, Samsung Galaxy Camera EK-GC100 is quite simple system, version 4.1.2). The screen has the following characteristics: resolution 1280 x 720, diagonal 4.8 inches, type HD Super Clear Touch Display. The maximum resolution is 4608x3456. The image quality of Samsung Galaxy Camera EK-GC100 is excellent, with zooma (21x) the image is almost unchanged, autofocus at long distances works at a hundred percent (today it is not a rare phenomenon). Shooting while driving is also good. The power button is located on top and is easy to find. Since this is an Android camera, you can immediately post photos to social media and install various apps. You can use Wi-Fi or Sim card for this. The storage capacity of the device is not large (4 GB), but there is a possibility of expansion through a memory card, which is pleasing. So far, I have not found any disadvantages of Samsung Galaxy Camera EK-GC100. Even a grandmother can easily understand the controls. Perhaps, over time, the device will become obsolete (released in 2012). It's not a bad choice for the average user to capture vivid or everyday moments.

Advantages of Samsung Galaxy Camera EK-GC100:

powerful zoom;
bright flash;
small size;
Running on Android, allowing you to send pictures to the Internet or cloud storage immediately if you have Wi-Fi network;
the ability to connect headphones for listening to music and playing games.

Full HD video capture with smooth, lag-free video streaming, video bitrate up to 22000kbps provides good clarity.
The display has rich colors, brightness and clarity like an expensive TV.

Samsung Galaxy Camera EK-GC100 Disadvantages:

video shooting suffers from a lack of brightness, especially at night in street lighting;
rapid battery drain, with only 200 shots;
in some cases you will need to buy a second battery or a standalone charger.

For a compact camera, this is a good enough option. During a video session on Skype, the interlocutor noted high quality video, but with interruptions every 20 seconds due to the camera closing and opening the lens. Skype probably doesn't keep it in constant working mode. Third-party shooting programs do not support zoom and adjustment of shutter speed, light sensitivity, exposure and aperture, as well as have worse quality of material and may contain advertisements.

Pros:

21x optical zoom;
Android OS;
large touch screen;
many applications for photo processing;
Full HD video recording;
minimum aperture value of f/2.8 at the short end;
low battery consumption;
color choice (I chose white).

Ability to install a SIM card and use the device as a tablet. Ergonomic design, high quality manufacturing.

Minuses:

21x optical zoom on the long end can lead to some reduction in image quality, which is to be expected;
problems with saving applications to the memory card via APP2SD and similar programs;
small amount of internal memory (only 5 GB), which can cause inconvenience when working with a large number of files;
rating of 4 for usability due to problems with saving applications to the memory card.

I bought this camera for 11,500 rubles in September. It's not just a camera, but a universal device that replaces a tablet, a laptop, a DSLR, an ordinary soapbox, a video camera, an audio player and a game console. Headphones are included, emphasizing the multimedia and versatility of the device. The camera shoots photos and video, in my opinion, as a usual good soapbox, and I, frankly speaking, after a DSLR, lacks quality. At high ISO values there is a lot of noise, so it is recommended to shoot with the lowest possible sensitivity. Otherwise, the device performs all other functions, except perhaps making coffee. You can install a 32GB or 64GB memory card and load whatever you want into it. The camera does a great job of playing movies and games. Just install whatever is available in the Play Market and enjoy. All in all, this is the first all-in-one device that really works and delivers.

Here is the corrected text:I want to share my impressions about this model even before the sales started. I work at Samsung and had a chance to hold the device in my hands and explore its features.This Android 4 camera is specifically designed for photographers. It offers many different apps including photo editors, allowing you to do anything you want with your images. There is also the option to connect a microphone or flash, install a sim card for sending SMS and even use the device for Skype communication thanks to the built-in microphone. The menus are simple and straightforward and the 4.8-inch display is Super AMOLED.The device has a 1.4GHz quad-core processor and supports Wi-Fi. Thus, it is a combination of a camera and a tablet. The optics are also on a high level, they are close in structure to DSLR cameras, which provides excellent photos with a large zoom (if I understood correctly, 21x).

I'm sure many people will criticize this camera review because of the lack of certain aspects. To mitigate the criticism, I would like to present my view of this product.

First of all, you should not expect anyone to buy the Galaxy Camera as a smartphone replacement, so comparing the quality of photos with other cameras would be incorrect. This is a meaningless and unnecessary comparison, like comparing a race car with a small car when transporting an IKEA cabinet from the store "Belaya Dacha" to the center of Moscow through traffic jams. Of course, it is possible to make such a comparison, but it is not necessary.

Secondly, I expect to be accused of not comparing photos with other digital cameras (there is one, but only with one model, the Sony NEX5). I'm sure that's what will happen. The problem is that I don't know which cameras to make the comparison with. When I asked this question, I was offered many different camera models. With inexpensive digital cameras? But they are not chosen based on image quality, but rather on the brand, sensor resolution, optics and other preferences of the buyer.Considering that Samsung is the leader in the production of such cameras, we can say that optics and image quality are not the determining factors in the choice, rather, all parameters together and brand awareness for ordinary users are important. I would like to believe that this is not the case for you, but most people do not choose a camera based on the quality of images, unfortunately, this is the reality of our world.

Instead, you could take Sony's NEX camera (model 5 or 7, which doesn't really matter) and experiment with lenses to demonstrate that it shoots better. My initial assumption is that it will, and I don't even want to test it (although I still choose to do so!). And do you know why? Because the Galaxy Camera is a completely different product, even though it's called a camera and performs that function. In addition, the company is positioning it as a different class of device. Which one? An interesting question, and I'm not ready to answer it yet, because probably all cameras in the future will become similar and get similar features. This product is not intended for the mass market. No, no and again no. It is not perfect, and it has a number of flaws and problems related to the ideology of Android. Moreover, its cost is clearly not optimal compared to expensive compact digital cameras or mirrorless cameras that cost about the same. However, the Galaxy Camera can accommodate usage scenarios that are unimaginable in other cameras today. And no one will be able to say how realistic, in-demand or invented they are. It's just an attempt to look into the future that a manufacturer like Samsung can afford.

An example of this approach can be found in the recent past with the Galaxy Note. The company created a device with a large screen and stylus when the market was focused solely on touch input. However, by the time the Note was released, it was clear that such devices were not popular, and the Dell Strike failed. There wasn't much investment in the Note, and the approach to the category changed several times over the course of six months. However, it suddenly proved to be a bullseye hit - people started coming up with stylus usage scenarios and reasons why they wanted the Note. It became a success for its market segment. Before launching the second Note model, the company revised its strategy, added unique features and took the product to a whole new level. By getting feedback from the market, the company was able to improve the product and offer scenarios that were in demand. With the Galaxy Camera, roughly the same thing is happening. It is a first generation product released in response to innovations from digital camera manufacturers like Nikon. Samsung tested the product, developed usage scenarios, and provided the flexibility to install additional apps. Now the company is exploring which scenarios will be used in practice. This approach works because people have a better understanding of how the camera can be used.

For example, for me, using the Galaxy Camera is atypical for most people. This camera is designed for everyday snapshots, in addition to my phone. I am attracted to the zoom and macro mode, as well as the ability to immediately share photos on social media. It's a simple reportage camera (don't judge harshly, reporters come in many forms). The main thing for me is the presence of a good zoom, which allows you to examine objects in detail or take pictures of people without getting close to them. And unlike DSLR cameras, you can do it discreetly without attracting attention. This is my usage scenario, it may be different for someone else. A friend of mine thinks it would be convenient for him not to have to take his laptop with him to copy drafts of drawings - he plans to mark controversial points directly on the photos and mail them to customers and partners. Scenario? Yes. Massive? No. But it shows the flexibility that an open platform provides. And this is where my imagination can't imagine all the possible uses for the camera. There are many, but which ones will be in demand is unknown. Only practice will tell.

When I first saw an image of the Galaxy Camera, it did not arouse much interest in me - in appearance, it is an ordinary digital camera, of which there are many on the market. My mind automatically compared its size to the existing NV series soapboxes. So when I first picked up the camera, I was struck by its size - subconsciously I expected it to be a bit smaller. But it's quite comparable to Sony's NEX series or Samsung's mirrorless cameras. It's significantly larger than the soapboxes. On the other hand, it fits in a jacket pocket and is quite compact for this type of camera. I want to emphasize again that my expectations were wrong, but after doing a similar experiment with others (showing photos and then the camera itself), I noticed that most people are surprised by its size. It's not huge, but you expect something smaller. Why? I don't know, perhaps it has to do with the analogy with phones. The device measures 128.7 x 70.8 x 19.1 mm and weighs 305 grams.
