Fujifilm X-T20 manual and review

Fujifilm X-T20 manual and review
Fujifilm X-T20 manual and review

The unit was purchased in August 2021, used but in excellent condition. Its cost was only 29,000 rubles excluding the lens, which was a low price for such a condition. After all, used versions of this model cost from 30,000 rubles and were in much worse condition. Two months before that I bought a Fujifilm X-T20 and a 16-50 kit lens, as well as a similar lens from AliExpress that Olympus and Pergear already had. Initially, I only used these two lenses on the X-T20. I liked the convenient focus mode switch on the body, which was very handy.

I didn't like the 16-50 on this lens. Detail was poor and colors were muddy. This lens worked better with the X-M1. And with the cheap Pergear it produced very sharp images!

It was only a year later that I was able to buy the Fujinon XF18-55mm. This versatile lens was a pleasure to use. I took beautiful shots with it in various conditions, although sometimes the focus was a bit of a letdown. For example, the Olympus did not allow this. On the sides, where the strap is attached to the body, I had to attach pieces of leather... Fujifilm's body turned out to be poorly coated, easily scratched. And those pieces of leatherette, which are attached to the belt itself, constantly slip off, and no protection. That's another minus. I compare it to the Olympus and the same X-M1 - not a single scratch on them, even though they are much older than this unit. The screen is also tilting (not swiveling), like the Olympus, touch screen.

Why did I choose this particular model? First of all, the value for money. The colors and shades are richer than Olympus, and the sensor is larger. The design is amazing too. All in all, there's plenty of room for creativity! The only thing that separates Fuji from Olympus is the need to set up lens-less shooting in the settings menu to be able to use the manual glass. You also have to switch the focus mode from auto to manual (or vice versa). In the case of the Olympus, I just switch lenses and shoot.

I have been using my Fujifilm X-T20 with the XF18-55mm F/2.8-4 lens for a year now. In the beginning I was attracted by the light reproduction and the small size of the camera compared to classic DSLR cameras. After a year I can confirm that the color reproduction is very decent and exceeds all expectations. That's why I started to shoot less often in RAW format and more and more often choose JPEG. The rotating display is now in many camera models, but I was skeptical of this feature at first. However, in this camera, the display was very convenient for shooting at the lowest and highest points, just lower or raise the display. The viewfinder allows you to shoot in sunny weather, as the display becomes less informative in bright light. Camera speed through the viewfinder, autofocus and continuous shooting seemed a little faster than through the display.Electronic shutter will be appreciated by fans of silent shooting, you can also disable the sound of the frame clicking, providing complete silence when shooting.Currently I use a standard 18-55mm lens with stabilization, as it is universal and suitable for most tasks. I also plan to purchase one of the Fujifilm Fujinon fx with F/2 aperture.

The camera's Wi-Fi allows you to operate it remotely, eliminating the need to buy an additional remote control. You can easily control the camera with your smartphone through a special application Fujifilm Camera Remote. In addition, using this application you can quickly transfer photos to your phone or tablet and quickly share them on social networks.I would like to note that the camera can be charged from Power Bank through a regular micro USB cable. From personal experience, I recommend buying an additional battery, as it is not always possible to charge the Power Bank in time, and the second battery will serve as an additional insurance. In general, the camera is very good, its body is very good.

Excluding the medium-format GFX, Fujifilm has been developing its mirrorless lineup for several years now using proven methods: key technologies are first introduced in the flagship X-Pro, then transferred to the reportage X-Tx, and then appear in simplified form in the more affordable X-Txx, which accounts for the majority of sales thanks to the balance between functionality and price. The X-T10 (together with the X100) can be considered Fujifilm's most successful camera in the "new era". The X-T20 should continue this tradition. The relationship between the X-T20 and the X-T2 is quite complex. On the one hand, I was given a list of 25 points of differences between the younger and older models before I started testing. These include a smaller viewfinder, no moisture protection, limited controls, a mechanical shutter with shutter speeds starting at 1/4000 (instead of 1/8000), and slower continuous shooting speeds. On the other hand, the X-T20 is based on the same processor and sensor combination. Thus, the shooting quality remains the same and most of the changes are in terms of usability and reportage features. Professionals may be disappointed, but enthusiasts find this offering excellent. Are there any hidden nuances here? The second aspect we will return to periodically in this review is the differences between the X-T20 and X-T10, and whether it is worth switching from the previous model to the newer version. It's a classic situation, pretty much.

While the differences between the X-T1 and X-T2, however slight, were immediately noticeable, for example in size, the X-T20 is virtually the same as the X-T10. In fact, it's the same body, which has become half a millimeter thicker. Fujifilm didn't reinvent the wheel and simply changed the engraving on the body with the model name and added a "C" notch on the exposure compensation wheel, which allows you to change exposure up to EV 5.0 instead of EV 3.0.However, the lack of significant changes only matters in a dynamic market where gadgets are constantly being updated, such as smartphones. In this case, we can say that the camera has remained as beautiful. It is a small and graceful instrument made in retro style, although without the trademark "Fujifilm" hint of rangefinder classics, but with a pseudo-mirror hump where the viewfinder and flash are hidden.

There are two color schemes: silver and black. Although the X-T20 doesn't have dust and moisture protection, that doesn't mean you can't use it in the rain. However, you won't be as comfortable using it in different weather conditions as you would with the X-T2. The minimum stated operating temperature is 0°C.

The camera body is made of metal and covered with rubber at the grip points. The rubber is located on both the front and back of the camera, providing a comfortable grip. There is a small overhang for the right hand and a thumb rest for comfort when shooting without a shoulder strap. The camera is lightweight (weighing 383 grams), so it's comfortable to hold.
On the front panel there is the lens mount, lens release button, focus mode switch, first selector dial and AF illumination diode.
On the left side there is an external microphone jack (2.5 mm), USB 2.0 and microHDMI ports, covered with a rubber cover. There are no functional elements on the right.
On the top panel is a mode selector with a lever to raise the flash, "hot shoe", shutter speed switch with a lever to activate auto mode (SR +), release button with a thread for the release cable and a switch, exposure compensation selector and a programmable key.
On the bottom panel are battery and memory card compartments and a thread for tripod mounting. Access to the memory card may be difficult when the camera is mounted on a tripod.

The rear panel features an electronic viewfinder eyepiece with a proximity sensor and a button to switch between viewfinder and display, playback and delete buttons, autofocus and exposure lock keys, a second selector dial, a three-inch flip-down screen, a quick menu button, a five-position navigation key (the center part is responsible for the main menu and the sides for additional functions), and a button to change the display mode.

Camera type: mirrorless with interchangeable optics.Matrix: APS-C, 24.3 effective megapixels.Maximum video resolution: 3840×2160.Maximum video frame rate: 60fps.Viewfinder: electronic.Mount: Fujifilm X Mount. Lens included.Image stabilizer (still photography): not available.Screen size: 3 inches.Screen: swivel, touchscreen. The Fujifilm X-T20 Kit camera is suitable for use by professional and novice photographers. This model has perfectly balanced technical characteristics, is easy to operate and shows excellent results even in difficult shooting conditions. With the X-T20 Kit from Fujifilm, you can add rich and detailed images to your portfolio, as well as high-quality high-definition video footage. The 24.3-megapixel X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor is highly sensitive to light and captures the light hitting every pixel. Thanks to this, maximum detail of objects and sharp drawing of the play of light and shadows are achieved. The absence of a low-pass filter is compensated by color filters that reduce moiré and prevent color distortion. The X-Processor Pro high-speed processor and sensor backlighting are responsible for noise reduction. Processor cores ensure improved image quality and accurate autofocus performance.

The wide sensitivity range of this camera, from 100 to 51,000 ISO units, allows you to shoot in low or low-light conditions. It is important to note that even when using high light sensitivities, image quality remains at an acceptable level. Noise level in photos, both at low and high ISO values, remains within the normal range. Continuous shooting is possible at up to 14 frames per second with the electronic shutter. The hybrid autofocus system provides the camera with fast and accurate focusing. The focus points cover most of the frame, so the camera focuses quickly on the subject and keeps it in focus until the moment of shooting. It is worth noting that the camera menu allows you to select different modes of operation of the focusing system. The user can choose from the following options: single-area focus, single-point focus, tracking autofocus or face detection mode. The camera also features a special "Advanced SR Auto" mode that automatically recognizes scenes and provides intelligent focusing.

Video recording is possible in two formats: Full HD at 60 frames per second and 4K UHD at up to 30 frames per second. The resulting clips are highly detailed and smooth, regardless of the selected resolution. The sound quality is also at a professional level: the recording is made with minimal loss and the maximum level of realism. However, it should be noted that the camera is equipped with a special connector for connecting an external microphone. Also on the body of the camera has an HDMI port for recording video on external recorders. Wi-Fi function provides quick transfer of the footage to a smartphone or computer, and also allows you to remotely control the shooting process.
