Samsung NX3000 manual and review

People often ask me, what camera can take such great pictures? I proudly answer: Samsung NX3000. About six months ago, my old camera, which had served me faithfully for seven years, broke down. It became necessary to choose a new one.

The Samsung NX3000 is a mirrorless camera with interchangeable optics. It features an APS-C format sensor with 20.3 effective megapixels. The maximum video recording resolution is 1920×1080 and the maximum frame rate is 30 frames per second. There is no viewfinder, instead it uses on-screen display instead. The camera's mount is the Samsung NX. It comes with a lens, but there is no image stabilizer for photography. The screen size is 3 inches, it is rotatable and allows you to work in viewfinder mode.

Here are the main criteria that guided my choice:

Fast focusing. Most often I photograph an active child, and I hate to see blurred moments.

Color rendition. I have heard and seen that some models distort colors, for example, "blue", "yellow" or "noise". I would like to see the most realistic color reproduction possible.

Design. I would like the camera to be beautiful.

HD shooting. A child, you understand.Wi-Fi. A nice addition, but not mandatory.

Weight. It is important that the camera is not too heavy and bulky. In the end, I chose Samsung NX3000 - a mirrorless model with interchangeable optics.

Specifications

Number of pixels: 20.3. Total pixels: 21.6 million. Can you imagine how high quality the photos turn out? I am thrilled with the quality, the resolution of the photos is 5472 x 3648. When I take a picture of something, I can easily see the smallest details, and that's without exaggeration.

Sensitivity: 100-3200 ISO (extended ISO: ISO6400, ISO12800, ISO25600). What do these numbers mean? It means that in darkness, dusk, and bright sunlight I get stunning shots with excellent color reproduction.

Ultra-short shutter speed: 1/4000th of a second. Sharp shots!

Shooting speed: 5 frames per second. Indeed, everything happens very fast. There is a timer, the setting time can be chosen any convenient for you.

Battery powered, no batteries required

Flip-up screen. You can take selfies. It is convenient for me to use it when I set the camera on a timer, my child and I have time to stand up as we please and take pictures of each other.

The camera shoots full HD video in 1920 x 1080p. Great quality, let me tell you.

The auto mode is completely satisfactory to me. For those who are savvy, there are various modes and settings.

The finish of the body under the leather. Doesn't get dirty, doesn't get dirty, doesn't slip in your hand.

The kit has a flash and a lens. If desired, you can replace. I am satisfied with everything.

Right in the camera you can edit pictures, for example, to make black and white or remove the red-eye effect.

All the photos in my review are taken with this camera. I will definitely add more photos. I will add a few comments to the review. I used to think that the Wi-Fi in this camera was just a nice bonus, but now I realize that I was wrong.

After I downloaded the Samsung SMART CAMERA App on Google Play, new possibilities opened up in front of me:

° view the photos I took on my phone;

° copy your favorite photos from the camera to your phone;

° delete photos I don't like from my phone to my camera;

° display the image from the camera on the phone screen and take online photos;

° change shooting modes from the phone (for example, sensitivity to light, turn the flash on or off, and so on), and change the focus of the image.

The mode switching problem seems to be common to all NX cameras. I've had the NX1000, NX2000, and now the NX3000. So I decided to put up with this drawback as the rest of the performance, especially the weight and photo quality, is fine with me. I initially switched from the NX1000 to the NX2000 for the touchscreen, but I like the button navigation better, so I went back. However, I often missed the swivel screen, so I switched to the NX3000.The first thing I was happy with, of course, was the swivel screen. The second was the ability to shoot macro. In the NX1000 I had this feature, but it didn't work. In the NX3000 it works, but not with all lenses. The 20-50 doesn't work, the 50-200 does. Another noticeable but not usability related difference is apparently a different file processing program. I ran into this when I was shooting RAW. I used to use Photoshop CS6 to process RAW files, but now have to switch to Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.Most of all, I didn't like the lack of a remote control option, either wired or wireless.

Regarding the comments in the reviews:

1. Uncomfortable navigation. Navigation is easy, it's just a little different because it's a different camera. Spend a day learning it and that's it.

2. Poor focusing, especially in the dark. It's not the camera that focuses, it's the lens, so the complaint is misplaced.

3. Poor video quality due to focusing. Most likely, the video was shot handheld. With autofocus, you should only shoot video from a tripod and without moving or turning. Handheld video should only be shot with manual focus. And this is not a defect of this camera, it is a feature of all SLR and mirrorless cameras without internal stabilization. Such cameras are the majority.

4. Lack of touch screen. Also an inappropriate claim, as there are other models for this.

- Ergonomic and comfortable grip, suitable even for people with large hands (much better than the Sony NEX).

- High quality images at ISO up to and including 3200, a rare exception when photos at high ISO values do not cause discomfort (some may consider noise reduction too aggressive, but it is done to eliminate noise, on other cameras you have to do it on the computer).

- Carefully designed ergonomics, without unnecessary elements (programmable buttons allow you to customize the really important functions), the quick menu is well thought out and sufficient, the main menu is concise and clear.

- Excellent autofocus with the right lens (fast and accurate).- Amazing color (can be compared with many cameras of different systems, a unique combination of saturated colors in Vivid mode and soft tones in Portrait), yes I know how to work with Photoshop and Lightroom, but now it can be done for fun, not out of necessity.

- Having a standard hot shoe and studio mode screen (screen does not change brightness depending on shooting settings).

- Clear, bright and colorful screen with accurate color reproduction, unexpectedly nice screen rotation feature for selfies.

- Ability to display level, histogram and grid on the screen.

- Excellent value for money.

- Decent lens included.

If you need to take photos, you can safely buy Samsung NX3000 + 20-50mm lens. I have something to compare it with, I also have a Sony a6000 and Canon 5D. In terms of picture quality, Samsung is not inferior to its competitors. In terms of usability, the Sony a6000 wins because of the viewfinder, but otherwise they are about the same. However, the Samsung's price is three times less (I bought it for 9,999 rubles on Black Friday). The 20-50mm lens is excellent, although it is slightly inferior to the Sony 35/1.8 (the price of the 35-1.8 is higher than the Samsung NX3000 + 20-50mm lens kit).The purchase was random, I chose the Samsung because of the low price, but after shooting I was satisfied. Another plus - Adobe Lightroom is included, but it will be useful only for those who shoot in Raw format.

The camera is fast, but the menus are complicated: you look for the "shoot by wink" function, but it's only available in a mode other than auto, and only with autofocus enabled. Otherwise, this menu item is simply missing (it's not dimmed, it's just not there!). To view a 1:1 photo, you have to do a lot of actions - it's a pity there's no touch screen. The lens is dark, photos often go to ISO 3200 in normal light. ISO 3200 is actually quite workable, squares hardly appear, but there is certainly no comparison with ISO 100. In manual mode you can shoot fine, but it will take 30-60 seconds to get ready to take a photo, as everything is very unintuitive. It only shoots in RAW in modes other than auto (Lightroom is included). The flash works well, no blinding or glare. The flip-down screen for selfies is impressive.Wireless functions work as stated: photos from the camera can be transferred to your phone, you can output to a TV with DLNA support (the camera creates a DLNA-server, and in the wireless network the TV sees it and reads photos and videos from there), but everything happens very slowly (photos flip through 5-10 seconds, video slows down every 20 seconds - maybe it's just me?).In general, a very ambiguous impression of the camera, you should try it with a light lens or with optical stabilization for the eye So far I give it a 4 with a stretch.
