Canon PowerShot SX160 IS Camera - reviews

We bought the Canon PowerShot SX160 IS camera spontaneously before our trip to Thailand. I needed an inexpensive camera, which is not a pity to carry in a beach bag. Since size also mattered, the choice fell on this model.

The main advantages of Canon PowerShot SX160 IS:

Intuitive interface.
Compact size.
A large selection of modes.
Excellent optical zoom.
Powered by AA batteries (finger).

The main disadvantages of Canon PowerShot SX160 IS:

Noise in photos at night.

And now let's take a closer look at all the characteristics of the Canon PowerShot SX160 IS camera.

Size: It is convenient to hold the camera with one hand, which we appreciated on excursions when we want to take pictures left and right. The display size is 3 inches, the most suitable for viewing photos.

Modes: The most popular mode for us, of course, is automatic. Here it is called Smart Auto Auto Tuning Mode, and that's what the manufacturer promises.

Even beginners will be able to easily take high-quality photos and shoot videos thanks to the Smart Auto mode, which is able to recognize the type of scene and choose the ideal settings from 32 options (21 for video). Smart Auto is a fully automatic mode; all you need to do is point the camera and take a picture.

Its meaning is as follows: you point the camera at the target, and the smart system automatically determines which settings to set. The preferred mode icon appears on the display in the upper right corner, and all that remains is to press the shutter button.

The most important condition is always to press the shutter button halfway first so that a green frame appears on the display! And only then press the button until it stops. Thus, the camera has time to focus, which will avoid blurred photos.

At home, I indulge in manual settings modes. By the way, fully manual mode on models of this class is not a frequent phenomenon. The algorithm is as follows: switch the camera to manual mode, set the aperture value and ISO, and then select the shutter speed so that the mark on the exposure scale is kept at zero. In this article, everything is clearly shown and told.

ZOOM: Canon PowerShot SX160 boasts 16x optical zoom. He was very useful to us at the zoo, I wanted to take pictures of all the animals.

Video: The manufacturer promises 720p HD video with stereo sound. Well, not to say that it's super-duper, but it's not bad either. We used videography quite often, since some moments are better to see once than to hear a hundred times.

Powered by batteries: Four batteries and a charger for them were immediately bought for the camera. Thus, we always had spare batteries with us. Accumulators were taken for 2500 mA / h, one set was enough for 300-400 photos, or even more, depending on which mode to photograph.

Work on mistakes: The main friend of any camera is daylight. But even in sunny weather there is a catch: for us, ordinary users, the basic rule is that the sun should always be behind the photographer's back. At dusk, there is an ambush in general, noises come out in the photos, clarity forgot that it should be clear, and color reproduction ran away. And that's where photo editors come to the rescue.

There are a lot of online editors now, and it is absolutely not necessary to have super skills to use them. Sometimes it is enough to press the Auto-correct button. For example, I will add a couple of comparisons. Maybe I went a little too far with saturation, but the general meaning is clear.

Of course, it makes no sense to compare this model with a SLR camera, even a budget one, but the SX160 performs its functions in good faith. For example, in the review for the serum there are photos from this camera and from a DSLR for 25 thousand money. But since the photos of the composition on the label do not have a special artistic value, the difference in quality is not noticeable.

Bottom line: I recommend the camera to those who need an inexpensive reliable soap dish that will always be at hand.

I bought this camera for 5,000 money. I chose it for a very long time, I wanted, of course, a mirror, but it was very expensive. I limited myself to this. I have never regretted it. Shoots high-quality photos and videos, although it slows down a little when you take pictures with a flash. Easy to use. I've been using it for less than a year, but I'm very happy.

I'm generally a fan of Canon. Inexpensive and very high-quality equipment. This camera was no exception.

I bought it more than six months ago for about 5 thousand money, since then I have never regretted it.

The menu is very clear, accessible, excellent settings, a lot of functions, a chic macro, an excellent zoom, not all professional cameras are famous for such a zoom as this particular model. Good flash. You can even adjust its flash brightness.

Of the minuses, I can still note the difficulties when trying to take a high-quality photo in motion, it is especially difficult to catch a restless child and poor focusing on a light background.

I have a small, nimble toddler at home, it took me a long time to take high-quality pictures in motion. But here it's most likely in my handiness. Now the camera is constantly on the storyboard, and even when the baby is running, great pictures are obtained.

In general, a great family camera. In some moments, it is not inferior to professional in any way.

This camera was purchased to replace the simplest digital soap dish of the same company (A490), to create a family photo archive.

When searching, one of the main conditions for choosing a camera was the use of AA type elements, that is, the possibility of using both batteries and conventional finger batteries. Plus, in this situation, I felt during a long trip, when my friends had a dead battery on the camera, and I could just buy batteries in any store. However, the use of this power method affects the size of the camera itself, which is much larger than its classmates with a classic battery.

So, one of the advantages of this device is the presence of a 16x optical zoom, which will appeal to fans of shooting landscapes, or objects from a long distance without loss of picture quality, as it happens when using digital zoom.

The case of the device itself is made of dark plastic, non-marking, which does not leave scratches. On the upper end there is a small speaker that will allow you to hear the sound on the video only in a quiet environment, also from above you can see the flash that opens only manually, the automatic flash function is present. Under the control of the right hand, there is a shooting mode selection wheel at the top, there are ten of them, but I always use only auto, or silent mode, there is also a shutter release button, a zoom lever and an on/off button.

Two microphone holes are visible from the front, and the lamp is orange. From the bottom there is a thread for mounting the device on a tripod and a battery compartment cover with a slot for a SD memory card.

On the sides of the device, under the protective covers, there is a memory power battery (CR1220, which has served me for about three years), as well as mini hdmi and a/v out digital interface sockets for viewing photos and videos directly on the TV, bypassing the computer.

The area of the back panel is two-thirds occupied by an LCD display, to the right of which there is a separate video recording button, as well as other control buttons.

For three years of using this camera, he has proven himself as a faithful assistant for preserving joyful moments for a long memory.

My camera is already several years old. I don't remember exactly, I won't say, but it's been more than 5 years for sure. It's already somewhere even closer to ten. I love this camera because it was the best among the "soap dishes". Well, from those "soap dishes" that I personally saw and held in my hands.

The camera is cute, but weighty, it's just inconvenient to carry it in your pocket, unfortunately. Over the years, it is difficult to make a mistake in this. If you put it in a jacket, then it didn't go anywhere else, but in the old-fashioned way you can't stick it in jeans, like other more compact cameras. In a small (clutch) bag, too, will not go into every one. But if the bag is of normal size, or a backpack, then of course you can easily put this thing for shooting. That is, despite the fact that the "soap dishes" seem to be comfortable to carry with you - this camera is not one of those. Plus, yes, the weight is palpable straight.

In a bunch of settings, he has quite flexible settings, you can get lost, but if you delve into it, figure it out, then the photos will get better. On the Internet, you can find how to configure it for the desired "scenario".

I shoot mostly in the "Live" mode. But sometimes I change it.

I remember how in the first weeks after the purchase, it was a long time ago, I admired the ability to shoot clearly what is far away, there is quite a powerful magnification. Here I "unscrewed" the lens to the maximum.

Now I rarely use this, mostly if I bring it closer, then not as much as possible, but only if necessary.

Over the years of operation, what happened to the camera, nothing is directly terrible: The plug at the ports no longer "sits" as if poured in, it is now dangling from me. I've been used to it for a long time.

Something somehow got (moisture, I guess) inside the lens, where the lenses are. And now it can give some glare/spots in a certain angle and lighting. At first it was frustrating, then I realized that it was not always visible. It's bad that it can't be cleaned.

I was changing the battery. Not the ones that are rechargeable (actually powering the camera), but there is a small flat (tablet). When she sat down, my date/time flew off. And it flew off every time the camera was turned off. I thought everything was broken, but it turned out that you need to change the battery and everything will get better. And so I did. I worked on an old battery (before the date began to fly off) for several long years. Now there is a new one for several years.

Of course, the display was scratched. All covered in small scratches-hairs. There are no rough stripes, but somehow over the years the display has lost its "gloss".

Otherwise, he is a reliable friend. And I still don't want to change it. And if she did, it would be on a serious one, with a replaceable lens there, everything is fine. But for now, that's enough for me.
I can't show photos as such, here the site seems to forbid publishing what was published, but I quickly took a couple of photos. It's like this subject shooting. Not even in "Macro" mode yet.

Of course, it is difficult to evaluate the work of lenses based on these photos, but everything is bad. Without a flash and a tripod, that's how it turned out.

In general, the cord is still reliable for the camera. probably this brand is still worth its money. At least buy a "soap dish", at least a professional device. Reliable, for ten years for sure.

Cool. I like. I still love this camera, even though there are cameras in the phones now, too, it's not nonsense.

First of all, why I chose a Canon camera.

Having searched the Internet, I found out that for amateur shooting on a "CAR" it is better to choose a camera with a type of CCD matrix. If you score on YouTube: "the difference between CCD and CMOS matrices", then you can clearly see how they differ. As I understand it, for a camera with CMOS, the presence of a powerful removable lens is of great importance. Then the pictures will turn out cool. I was limited in funds. I had to choose: either an amateur half-mirror, or an ordinary soap dish. After going through the information on the Internet again, as well as studying the catalog of products in the Bagheera store, I found out that Canon with CCD will be better than the semi-mirrors with CMOS presented in the store (although they are 2 times more expensive). And in general, now almost all cameras have a CMOS matrix, oddly enough. Only Canon had a SSD matrix.

Now about the camera itself.

The soap dish is also a soap dish in Africa. The only thing I really like about this camera is the optical zoom 16 x. Photographed from the window of her apartment at a distance of about 80 m. I thought that my friend was walking with her granddaughter. Brought it closer. I'll make a reservation right away that the site does not allow you to upload photos of original quality, so don't blame me.

The color rendering is good, but still distorts the colors. So my eyes in a certain light in the photo seem greener than in real life. Although I really like this fact.

Advantages of Canon PowerShot SX160 IS:

Zoom.
Macro photography at altitude.
It's great to retouch photos in Photoshop.
Image stabilization (very useful when shooting children, animals).
Not bad videos.
Availability of 2 standard AAA batteries, which you can always buy at any store. For example, the next Canon PowerShot SX170 model has its own battery. But imagine if something happens to the battery during the trip or you forget the charger. And here everything is simple: you can either buy a new battery, or ask fellow travelers.
Cool shooting mode with the designation "M". For beginners, photographing is a great opportunity to "play" with the aperture, shutter speed, ISO. So to speak, to taste the basics of photography! This feature expands the possibilities.

Disadvantages of Canon PowerShot SX160 IS:

A powerful flash lights up the photos, so I have it set to -2 all the time. Because of the power, it takes a long time to recharge. At the same time, at dusk at a value of +2, it is still not enough even at a fairly close distance from the object.
It is difficult to focus on the skin, so people (body, face) often get noisy.
The camera also focuses poorly if the background on which the photo is taken is light, for example, white.
The batteries run out quickly.

Before that, there was a Canon PowerShot SX120 IS - by the way, it was better than the updated Canon PowerShot SX160 IS model, oddly enough. And the image stabilization was clearer. The Canon PowerShot SX160 IS model still sometimes gets muddy photos when shaking.

Also, if you compare two models of Canon PowerShot SX160 IS and Canon PowerShot SX170 IS, I will say that there are only 2 differences: The Canon PowerShot SX170 IS has its own battery (I wrote about its shortcomings above) and the videos of the models are different.

So for the doubters, the choice is obvious.
